Because many of you let us know you were interested in “green power” we’re happy to announce that it’s now available and easy to get. Here’s how it works: If a customer chooses to “go green” they can support renewable energy technologies (wind, solar, or biomass), based on 100 kilowatt-hour (kwh) block increments of their total power usage. Some people consider it their way of thinking about the environment, but to us, it’s simply delivering what our customers want.
With our “GreenWay” Program, signing up is as easy as checking a box on the attached Greenway Enrollment Form.
We understand that many of our customers will have questions about green power. Questions ranging from what is green power, to why are we offering it, and how does the program work? We’ve given brief explanations in past issues of HIGHLIGHTS, but will review a few key items again here.
Green power is power that is produced by using renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and geothermal. There are also sources known as biomass that use decaying farm by-products like manure or plant wastes to produce methane gas. In nearly all cases, the green power purchased by Garkane customers will come from wind turbines located in the western United States, as presently wind offers the lowest priced green power option and has the volume to meet the growing demand.
Remember, if you choose to receive 100% green power, it means that 100% of the power you use will be produced on the Western power grid. The green power is received somewhere on the Western power grid to which your home or business is also connected. Simply stated, somewhere on the Western power grid, an exact amount of power equivalent to your usage, is being produced by a renewable power producer. The premium you pay is supporting that production. Please allow one to two months for account set-up. Minimum of one year contract required.
