We appreciate your patience during the outage.
We remind you to be prepared for power outages by choosing an easily accessible closet or cupboard for an emergency supply of flashlights, batteries, and other needed items.

Garkane Energy is providing free electricity again this year for decorative Christmas Street Lighting in the cities and towns served by the cooperative. It’s our way of wishing our member-consumers a most joyous holiday season.”
Albrecht went on to say that community leaders were informed of the program during the first part of the month, and that Garkane crews have been available to assist communities with the installation of the decorations as well as the removal at the end of the season.

12/19/11 • GARKANE REFUNDS OVER $500,000 TO MEMBERS
Garkane Energy’s Board of Directors has announced that a $500,000 Capital Credit Refund was made to the cooperative’s membership in December. Current members saw their share of the refund as a credit on the power bill they received in the month of December, while former members who are still eligible for capital credit refunds will receive their checks in the mail. The refund is a result of the strong financial performance of the cooperative.
Capital Credit refunds are part of what makes a cooperative unique. When Garkane’s revenues exceed expenses, the excess revenues become a Capital Credit to the members of the cooperative, who are the customers who purchase the electricity. When cash flows allow, the cooperative issues a refund.
Garkane will also receive a wholesale power rebate from its power supplier, Deseret Power. Garkane is one of six cooperatives, which own and direct the operations of Deseret. Deseret provides power to Garkane and others from its Bonanza Power Plant near Vernal, Utah, as well as administering members’ contracts with the Western Area Power Administration, the federal power marketing agency, which delivers power to Garkane from Glen Canyon Dam. Deseret has also enjoyed a successful year, so Garkane, as one of its cooperative owners reaps the benefits and passes them along to its members.
Carl Albrecht, Garkane’s CEO, stated that he hopes “...a smaller December electric bill will make our members’ holiday preparations a bit easier in these tough economic times.” He went on to say, “Capital Credit Refunds should serve as a reminder of the benefits of being a cooperative member. Our members are receiving refunds at the same time customers of other energy companies are seeing rate increases!” Albrecht went on to say that Garkane’s Capital Credit refunds over the past ten years have totaled over $3 Million Dollars.
11/7/11 • WET SNOW STORM CAUSES OUTAGES IN KANAB CITY
Garkane Energy Customers in Kanab City experienced a power outage Monday morning, November 7, 2011 due to heavy wet snow, which blanketed the area.
Power went off to the city at approximately, 7:00 am and was restored by approximately 10:00 am.
The three or four inches of snow received is not usually a problem. However, when any snow accumulates on trees that have not yet lost their leaves, it becomes a hazard for any power line. Many trees limbs were weighed down with snowy wet leaves making contact with lines and pulling some lines down.
With the winter season now upon us, Garkane reminds its customers to plan ahead for weather-related power outages. Choose an easily accessible closet or cupboard for an emergency supply of flashlights, batteries, blankets, and other needed items.
10/17/11 • MICRO BURST WINDS CAUSE OUTAGE IN ESCALANTE & BOULDER
Garkane Energy member/consumers in the Escalante and Boulder areas, experienced a power outage early Monday morning, October 17, 2011, due to a severe micro burst, which hit the area.
The power went off at approximately 6:50 a.m. Monday, October 17. Power was restored to the Escalante area by approximately 7:30 am and by approximately 9:15 am in the Boulder area.
The outage was caused by severe microburst winds, which passed through the Transmission Corridor. Garkane crews were immediately dispatched to patrol lines and restore power. No equipment or structures were found to be damaged, but enough dust was stirred-up due to tornado type winds, that the circuit was tripped.
Garkane reminds its customers that the transmission lines serving our areas are radial (no loop feed) in nature, and long outages can occur if something happens on the line such as this.

10/10/11 • SNOW STORM CAUSES OUTAGES TO CEDAR MOUNTAIN
Garkane Energy Customers on Cedar Mountain experienced a power outage Wednesday night, October 5, 2011 due to heavy wet snow, which blanketed the mountain.
The mountain received about 18 inches of heavy, wet snow Wednesday, which accumulated on lines and trees causing outages in multiple areas. Power went off at Duck Creek and Meadow View at approximately 10:30 pm and was restored at approximately 2:00 am. However, power was also off multiple times during the night and through parts of Thursday due to snow load on the lines. Multiple trees had also fallen on lines due to snow build-up.
“We received some much needed moisture from a very strong, wet storm, which we are very thankful for. However, anytime we receive a southern storm, snow tends to build-up on our lines and conductors, resulting in power outages,” stated Rob Wolfley, Garkane’s Garfield Area Manager.
Battling miserable conditions at times, Garkane’s crews worked throughout the night and into the morning to locate and fix the various problems. “We commend our crews for enduring difficult conditions in order to restore power to our customers”, stated Wolfley. “We appreciate their efforts, and we’re sorry for the inconvenience power outages cause.”
“It is Garkane’s goal to provide reliable power to all our customers. We are in the business of providing low cost, reliable power. We take this responsibility very seriously. Unfortunately, unforeseen circumstances, such as the extreme weather conditions witnessed last week, make it difficult to guarantee uninterrupted power. We are subject to Mother Nature’s forces. This is one factor we simply cannot control. We appreciate your patience and support and we will do everything we can to keep power flowing.”
With the winter season approaching, Garkane reminds its customers to plan ahead for weather-related power outages. Choose an easily accessible closet or cupboard for an emergency supply of flashlights, batteries, blankets, and other needed items.

Signs will also be posted to inform members of the planned outage. Please pass the word to ensure all consumer/members on the mountain are aware.
